As I read through that definition, I found that there are different ways to walk and different types of walks described. Walking is a forward motion which can take place at different speeds. To walk, we have to cover ground. Sometimes as we walk we gain ground, sometimes we revisit certain ground which we thought we had already gained, but soon realize that it still needs tended too.
The action of walking is of voluntary control. We must have the desire to move forward, gain ground, and tend ground. We must wish to walk forward, up and out of the current location and towards the unknown that lies ahead.
Walking is a complex motion. Our actions, our conduct, and the way we walk is just as important as taking the steps to walk. As we walk, we are not only advancing in our own lives, whether taking small steps, whether moving forward or even backward [covering ground we thought was covered], we are simultaneously walking with others. It is a mistake to think that we are the only ones on a rugged, narrow path. It is a mistake not to look around us once in a while. It is a mistake to get so wrapped up in the correction, direction and the quality of our own walks that we dont notice those around us. It isnt about what we or anyone else thinks our walk should look like, it is about what He thinks our walk should look like and where He wants it to lead. The only way that we will have any knowledge of Him is to keep our eyes steadfast on Him, letting Him be "the light unto our path and lamp unto our feet."
To walk with someone by your side is both a blessing and a struggle. Fellowship is a wonderful blessing. Relating to one another while in the midst of trying to sort out our own walks is a learning experience. If we hit a bump in the road, a humble spirit is necessary to be able to realize that we need to stop walking and correct our mistake before we proceed. Sometimes we walk together, side by side for a season until our courses are spread wide apart by unforeseen events. No matter, we are both still walking.
Moving forward entails having something behind you to advance from. Walking forward means having something over your shoulder serving as a reminder of where you have been and what you have done. Walking forward means become stronger and gaining experience. Becoming stronger means walking through trials. Gaining experience means making mistakes, realizing them, and as we walk forward, trying not to repeat them. Not one among us is walking a straight enough path to judge another. We may not be side by side, but when we are at the very least in the same vicinity of one another, we must have grace & understanding towards our brothers. Not one among us is walking a straight enough path to judge another. Love and humility must be present in all interaction. Walking forward can mean forgetting what is behind you; it can also mean remembering milestones along the way.
The way that one walks cannot be duplicated by any other. The stride of a certain person is as unique as his fingerprint. So it is with the way that we proceed through life. As we walk on, we do find those we are similar to us, encouraging us that we are not alone. We find those who in relationship fill the gaps in our own character, helping to complete a beautiful picture. We also find those who are contrary and are on a completely different path.
We will never find another who thinks and walks exactly the way we do. We will never find another on this earth who can walk for us. To quote Herman Heese: "No wisdom is better than this when known: that every hard thing is done alone." What we can find is the strength of One greater than us that will help us walk, One who will pick us up and aid each step, each movement of our walk when we are humble enough to ask.
Putting one foot in front of the other, we must press on. We must delve deeply into our source of strength, the reason we walk. "Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
